Daisy or Eleanor

The Beatles song Eleanor Rigby started in the usual McCartney fashion of playing around on his piano, the name that first came to him was not Eleanor Rigby, but Miss Daisy Hawkins. The way it changed to Eleanor Rigby is a twofold story, partly conscious thought, partly subconscious. Paul came up with the name Eleanor from actress Eleanor Bron who had starred with The Beatles in the film Help!. Rigby came from the name of Bristol,Rigby and Evens Ltd. Wine and Spirits. He was looking for a name that sounded natural. However the graveyard of St. Peter's Church where John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met and later frequented to sunbath contains a gravestone of an Eleanor Rigby, who oddly enough lived a lonely life similar the the woman in the song. Father McKenzie started as Father McCartney but was changed to avoid people thinking it was about Paul's own father. A few yards away from Eleanor's tombstone was another marked McKenzie. Paul Conceded the names both could have been plucked from his subconscious.
