Keep It Under Your Hat

After doing the blog about Dr. Seuss I started thinking of all the sayings there are about hats and decided to give it further attention. "Hats Off" is simply what it sounds like, taking one's hat off to show respect, same deal as tipping one's hat. "Throwing a Hat In the Ring" started in the 19th century saloons where there was often a boxing ring in the middle of the barroom so that the customers who wanted to fight each other could throw their hat into the ring indicating they would fight anybody. Teddy Roosevelt also used the phrase in a speech when he decided to run for office and ended the say with "and I am stripped to the waist." "Talking Through Your Hat" to talk nonsense or lie. "Eating Your Hat" goes back to the reign of Charles II of Great Britain and referred to his amorous doings. They named a goat after him that had his same love of life, which included eating hats. Today it indicates your belief in a sure thing.
