The foods that are typically thought of after the phrase "As American as..." aren't really American inventions,but more accurately adoptions. Apple pie is much older than our country. Dutch apple pies with latticed crusts have been around since the 1500s but not in this country. The first apple seeds arrived in the future U.S. in 1625. The phrase "As American as apple pie"was in use by the 1860s. A better choice for an American pie would be Key lime pie.
That brings us to the hot dog which is a descendant of the sausage called the frankfurter which originated in Frankfurt,Germany. The naming of the hot dog did occur in America (New Jersey 1892) so in that respect it is somewhat American.
