Topping Things Off

A fun fact I recently came across and don't think is widely known is that Dr. Seuss (Theodor Geisel) had an extensive hat collection. Once you hear that fact it makes perfect sense. In his home he had a hidden room that housed the hat closet. He begin collecting the hats in the 1920s and had hundreds of hats from all over the world. When he gave dinner parties he would grab a selection of hats from the closet and ask everyone present to wear one and assume the personality the hat inspired. (Wouldn't that be fun?) The collection includes the iconic "Cat in the Hat" one,but it is thought the book preceded the hat which was a gift fashioned after the hat in the book. Geisel was also an artist and produced not only images for his books but paintings, drawings and sculpture.
