Hairy Mementos

Other than hairdressers making hair art I had never heard of any other art works made with human hair. In the 18th and 19th centuries hair art was made to mourn or express love for the dead. Hair artisans would use both hair from the deceased and the living to form flower bouquets, wreaths, braided jewelry chains, weeping willows and painted scenes of mourning. The art form isn't widely known as it was mainly for home display, not museum displays. That will be changing after the first of the year when The Mutter Museum of the College of Physicians of Philadelphia will present "Woven Strands: The Art of Human Hair Work". I'm guessing that none of my ancestors were hair artisans.
