Early Sunscreen

No,I'm not talking about zinc, this sunscreen was way earlier than zinc. From the mid to late 17th century when paleness was considered fashionable women wore the moretta, which was composed of cardstock  or cardboard then waxed and painted black with a final layer of black cloth, the only openings were for the eyes which gave the wearer a blank, almost not there look. Along with protection from the sun, the moretta also offered the women a chance to be out alone in public without being recognized since "ladies" didn't go out alone at that time plus the masks were held in place by holding a button between the teeth which made the wearers silent and every less likely to be recognized. Who knew?
