A Royal Pain

I imagine that little girls may still harbor dreams of being a princess, but from the adult point of view,it would be a hard sell for most people. Not only would your life be perpetually  under a microscope, but I for one would get fed up with the paparazzi and commit a less than flattering act.
What I really intended to talk about today is royals giving birth, prompted by Kate's (Duchess of Cambridge) pregnancy. While Kate has been a regular figure since marrying into the royal family, and now the focus is shifting to the unborn child, she still has it better than royals of days gone by. At Versailles, the queen and princesses of royal blood were required to give birth in public to prevent a substitution of the infant. In the days of Marie-Antoinette the birthing could be attended by the general public, but this was later changed so that the viewing was limited to the princes, the Chancellor and the ministers. If I had been given a choice of public birthing or the next royal being born to a sister-in-law,I would have happily ceded the honor. So once again, be careful what you wish for!
