The enigmatic fortune cookie,is a staple of American Chinese restaurants, but its past is contested. One would naturally assume that the cookies were invented in China, but the Chinese make no claim to them and when they were imported to China they didn't sell as they were "too American". They are mainly an American item, but are also served in Chinese restaurants in other countries. Most of the people who claim to have introduced if not invented the cookie are Japanese. It is still argued whether they were first made in Los Angeles,CA or San Francisco. An attempt to settle the dispute in the Court of Historical Review in 1983 the judge ruled in favor of San Francisco, but the dispute continues.
