Hair of the Cat

Today's post had several surprises for me, the first surprise was that brake fluid and anti-freeze both contain ethylene glycol which is poisonous to pets ( I knew about anti-freeze but not brake fluid). The second surprise was the antidote for this type of poisoning is ethanol, yes that's right booze! I assumed that vodka or other high proof alcohols would be just as likely to kill your pet as anything else. I made these discoveries after reading about a 7 year old cat named Princess who was found covered in brake fluid which she had tried to lick off. Her owner quickly rushed her to a vet where they in turn ran to the nearest liquor store for vodka which they administered via IV drip. There is also an expensive antidote called 4 MP but it is basically just more ethanol. Other than for treatment by a vet for this type of poisoning alcohol should never be given to a pet.
