Kind of ironic how the story about George Washington chopping down the cherry tree was a lie that was used to teach the value of honesty. The story stated that for his sixth birthday young George was given a hatchet and in his eagerness to try out the new toy he hacked up his father's cherry tree then according to the legend when asked George said the famous quote about not being able to tell a lie to which his father responded,"Glad am I,George, that you killed my tree;for you have paid me for it a thousand fold. Such an act of heroism in my son is more worth than a thousand trees." This fable was written after Washington had died by a pastor who was pressed for more stories to include in the biography,"The Life of Washington" and as we say,the rest is history.
