Has anyone ever given much thought to why moths and other insects gather around lights? It isn't because they are dumb insects there are actually a couple of reasons. Before the light bulb was invented moths used the moon to fly upright and maintain a course then suddenly there were hundreds of lights to navigate by,you can imagine their confusion. Also some insects are attracted to the light for the warmth which is a signal for a meal for some of the night time fliers. The reason they sometimes beat themselves to death on the light bulbs is because they are literally blinded by the light and can't get far enough away for their eyes to readjust to the darkness. If you're worried about the moths and insects committing suicide by light bulb use a LED light bulb as they are less lethal for the insects.
