In 1956 he accidentally invented Pop Rocks while he was trying to make self carbonating soda. A year later he developed Tang Flavored Crystals which later became popular when NASA used the powder to make the astronauts' metallic tasting water taste better. Mitchell also created powdered egg whites,quick set gelatin and whipped cream alternative known as Cool Whip.
