Today's topic isn't something most people ever think about since time zones were established in 1883 they solved the problem of what time it was when you traveled to a different area but before that there were at least 144 local times so if you think time zones are messy imagine dealing with local times before time zones were put in place. Before standard times were adopted most areas went by the town clock for the correct time and it didn't matter too much unless you were traveling by train then things got confusing and it became impossible to coordinate train schedules and it even caused collisions. So even though it can be confusing to figure the time zone differences it is by far superior to the pre- time zone times and considerably safer.
