Have you ever wondered why people in old photos look so severe? There were several reasons why smiles were seldom seen in early portraits, much like today times were hard, money was tight, the world was a polluted mess on the brink of global conflict but there were other factors too. People were leery of the new technology and didn't want their photo taken, small mouths were in vogue and smiling made the mouth look larger plus dental hygiene was not what it is today. Big smiles were thought to be a sign of madness so it was best to wear a grim expression. But the biggest factor was the length of time a photo took to be completed which was up to 15 minutes and trying to keep a smile in place would have taxed most peoples facial muscles so they went with their resting faces. Or maybe they were just crabby.
