Dirty Deeds

Speaking of education practices of the past yesterday made me remember reading about corporal punishments in schools in the early 1900s,even when I was in elementary school they still employed the occasional wooden paddle. The leader of the punishment pack (according to a record he kept) was a German headmaster who recorded 911,527 blows with a rod,124,010 blows with a cane,20,989 raps with a ruler,136,715 blows with the hand,10,235 blows over the mouth,7,905 boxes on the ear,and 1,118,800 raps on the head, not to mention 777 times boys were made to kneel on peas, and 613 times on a three cornered piece of wood. Also included in his record keeping were making 3,001 students wear the dunce cap,so if you kids think you have it rough today look to the past!
The following records were found in a school in England from as recent as the 1970s.
Learning the hard way: The record of corporal punishment from Greenfield Primary School in the late 1970s records how 'six blows on the rump' and 'two smacks on the bottom' were dished out as punishments for naughty chilren
Tough love: These entries from the early 80s show that one pupil received three blows with the back of the hand on the rump and another was given 'one slap on back of leg'
Troublesome tots: These two six-year-olds were both 'spanked on the buttocks with the flat of the hand' in 1974 for biting another child
