It's Nuts!

The other day I came across the word doughnut and as often times happens with me a light came on in my head wanting to know how that name came to be...they don't look like nuts and for the most part they don't contain nuts, here's what I found out. Most of us have probably heard at some point that doughnuts came to the US with the Dutch, but that isn't the exact truth, fossilized doughnut remains have been found prehistoric Native American settlements...but I digress. The way the nut got into the name (doughnut) happened in the mid 19th century when a ship captains mother using the spices from her sons ship and lemon rind to prevent scurvy decided to put hazelnuts or walnuts in the center of the dough to insure that the center of the fried dough cooked through. Being a literal minded woman she referred to her creation as doughnuts. As the story goes it was the woman's son (the ship captain) who claimed credit for later putting the hole in the doughnut, but the stories behind his motives for the hole vary.
