I'm not sure where I read/heard that Dave Thomas (of Wendy's fame) also played a part in the success of KFC,today I got around to looking into that matter. Dave was born to young unwed mother whom he never knew, and was adopted by the Thomas family at six weeks of age. His adoptive mother died when he was 5 and he moved around the country with his father after that. He got his first job at a restaurant in Knoxville,TN when he was 12 years old,he later lost it over a dispute with his boss. He moved again to Indiana and when his father was ready to move again Dave stayed on at the restaurant. When the Korean war started he joined the Army and requested to be sent to their cooking school. When he returned from the service he went back to the same restaurant in Indiana. In the mid 50s along came Col. Harland Sanders selling chicken franchises, after some consideration the people he worked for decided to buy in. Thomas was the one who came up with the idea for the bucket of chicken and also for the Col. to appear in the commercials. After turning four franchises around Thomas cashed in his shares for more than 1.5 million and went into the burger business, and did I mention all his achievements were accomplished before he got a GED in 1993?
