Madagascar is home to a variety of plant and animal life,a number of species unique to the island. The fossa is one of these species,it resembles a primitive cat,but is actually one of the largest members of the mongoose family. It can measure up to 6 feet long from nose to tip of tail and weigh up to 26 pounds. It is the largest carnivore native to Madagascar and feeds on lemurs, and most anything else available including wild pigs. It uses its long tail for balance while moving swiftly through the trees. It is a solitary animal, spends time in the trees and on the ground,it is also active both day and night. Fossas are presently endangered due to habitat loss.
