Mute Mutations

Maybe I'm the only one who wonders about things like how closed captioning works, but if it wasn't for me and my need to know how stuff works think of all the useless things you wouldn't know! I had assumed that when you muted a TV that a computer voice recognition program was responsible for the sometimes garbled results that appear on your screen, but that isn't how it works. Prerecorded shows are prepared ahead of time with a regular computer keyboard used to type the script and can be proofread and adjusted as needed before they're aired. Live shows are a little trickier, they use a specially trained stenographer and a modified court reporter's machine which easily explains how what your read using closed captioning can be challenging to interpret. So many wild cards come into play with this method that it would make a good subject for a TV show!
