May/Yam

Silly as it may sound I don't think I ever noticed that may and yam were a palindrome, but in the interest of getting on with today's post I won't dwell on that fact. I recently read about The Yam Festival that is held in the Trobriand Islands and found a couple of things worth sharing. First of all I had no idea yams could grow so big (9-12 feet long). The yams are then dressed in costumes to depict the farmers ancestors. Meanwhile the women of the island (even the married ones) are busy having their own festival which includes capturing and as some observers referred to it,raping any male of their choice which also usually involves the yam fields as they believe it fertilizes the soil. According to several articles I perused the islanders have yet to make a connection between sex and conception, but since yams contain a natural hormone that prevents pregnancy it is not an issue at festival time.
