Waddle This Way

Many of us will be waddling after Thanksgiving but today's waddling feature is about a penguin named LaLa who lived with a family in Japan and was known for wearing a backpack into town to the local fish market for her meals then stopping off at the homes of neighbors on the return journey to be hosed down to keep cool. The story of how LaLa came to live in Japan has some cruel twists to it before she arrived at her destination. Her owner had once remarked on a stuffed penguin belonging to a fisherman friend and the friend thought he wanted one of his own to have stuffed so the next time he caught one in his net (fishing off South Africa and Australia) he bound its feet and kept it that way for the three months it took for him to return. Once she was in the hands of her owner he built a refrigerated room for her after the bird refused to be returned to the ocean and the rest, as they say, is history.
