Worm charming (aka worm grunting and worm fiddling) is becoming rare,so to preserve the art it is now being taught to the younger generations and yes, competitions are held in several locations. The object is to attract earthworms from the ground for use as bait for fishing. Various methods are employed to accomplish the charming of the worms but the most common is vibrating the soil which imitates a mole digging who prey on earthworms. In competitions each team is given a zone usually measuring 3 square yards, the team consists of charmer, collector, and counter, the worms are returned to the soil after they are counted. The current world record is held by Sophie Smith,a ten year old from England who raised 567 worms in the 30 minutes given for the competition.
