The Real Date

The date that we celebrate as the 4th of July  more likely occurred on the 2nd of July. John Adams wrote home to Abigail on the 3rd of July that this day,July 2nd, will go down in history. Two days later congress accepted Jefferson's declaration (on the 4th). The 4th was further cemented as the official Independence Day when both Adams and Jefferson died on that day in 1826. The US has celebrated the 4th of July since 1777 but it was not an official holiday until 1870.
I hope I didn't rain on anyone's parade,my intention was only to pass on more trivial information! Enjoy your holiday.
