Long before the Bill Cosby bad publicity Jell-O had a shaky history. In 1904 Jell-O paid for an ad in "Ladies Home Journal" naming it one of America's favorite deserts...the only catch was up to that time it was relatively unknown. Gelatin had been popular in Europe since the Victorian age and eventually found its way to America but wasn't served often as it was too time consuming to make until it was made in powder form in 1845,but that didn't catch on due to lack of flavor. The gelatin powder eventually found its way into the hands of the Wait family who owned a failing cough syrup/laxative business, they simply added some sugary flavored syrups (88% sugar) and the product we know today was born. If that doesn't strike you as a nefarious past for a simple dessert, then maybe the fact that the Rosenbergs (executed for espionage in 1953) used a torn box of Jell-O to help two communist spies identify each other and exchange atomic secrets. That particular Jell-O box now resides in the National Archives.
