If you think tattoos and body piercings are odd then chance are you've never heard of a performance artist named Chris Burden. For the "Volkswagen Piece" he stood on the bumper of a VW bug laid back over the top and had his hands nailed to the roof. For the "Shoot Piece" he had a friend shoot him in the arm with a .22 rifle. He claims pain and fear energize the situation. He is now in his late 60's and has turned his hand to sculpture as he said the performance pieces wore him out...no kidding?
