Salt of the Earth

Most of you probably know that the word salary comes from the Latin word (salarium) sal being salt and when put together meaning roughly, worth your salt. Salt was used as pay in ancient times as it was so valuable, but I digress...The real topic for today is the Wieliczka salt mine in southern Poland. We are not talking about just another salt mine, this mine is on the list of World Heritage Sites. The attractions include dozens of statues, three chapels and an entire cathedral (and chandeliers!)
all carved out of rock salt by the miners. The rock salt is naturally gray colored rather than white like one would expect. The mine is no longer a working mine due to low salt prices, but is toured by about 1.2 million people annually. I am going to go out on a limb here and say if you have a pet snail or slug they would probably not enjoy the tour.
